How Elephants Communicate
A safari guide to the elephant's rich language of infrasound rumbles, body posture and trunk gestures — and how to read an elephant's mood and keep a safe distance.
Spend an hour with a family of African elephants and you slowly realise you are eavesdropping on a conversation that never really stops. Much of it happens below the threshold of human hearing, in deep infrasonic rumbles that roll across the savanna, but a great deal is written in plain sight: the set of the ears, the curl of the trunk, the way a matriarch turns her whole body to face a threat. Elephants are among the most socially sophisticated animals on the planet, and their communication reflects that. They coordinate movement over kilometres, negotiate access to water, reassure frightened calves and warn rivals, all through a layered system of sound, touch, chemistry and gesture. For a safari traveller, learning even the basics of this language does two things. It turns a distant grey shape into a legible, individual life, and it keeps you safe — because an elephant almost always tells you exactly how it feels before it acts.

Infrasound: the conversation you can't hear
The signature sound of elephants is the rumble, and its most remarkable component sits below the range of human hearing, from roughly 14 to 24 Hz. These low frequencies lose energy slowly as they travel, so a rumble can carry for several kilometres across open country, and even further in the still, dense air of early morning and dusk. Elephants also pick up seismic components of these calls through sensitive cells in their feet and trunk, effectively listening to the ground.
This is how families that have split to feed can reunite at a waterhole, and how a female coming into oestrus can broadcast her status across a landscape. On safari you will rarely hear the deepest rumbles, but you may feel a faint pressure in your chest, or notice several elephants suddenly freeze, lift a foot and orient in the same direction — a sign they are reading a message you cannot.

Reading the body from your vehicle
Body language is the part of elephant communication you can actually see, and it is the most useful skill for a visitor. Ears held out wide make an elephant look larger and usually signal alertness or a warning; ears flapping loosely and rhythmically, by contrast, are mostly for cooling and indicate a relaxed animal. A high head, a fixed stare and a trunk held stiffly toward you say 'I have noticed you and I am not comfortable'.
Watch the whole animal, not just the face. A relaxed elephant browses steadily, moves unhurriedly and keeps its trunk busy with vegetation. Tension shows as sudden stillness, head-shaking, dust-throwing, or a foot swinging back and forth. The classic mock charge — ears out, trumpeting, a fast few steps that stop short — is a bluff designed to move you off. The correct response is to let the driver back away quietly, never to push closer for a photograph.

The trunk as a hand and a voice
With around 40,000 muscle units, the trunk is one of the most versatile organs in nature, and much of elephant social life passes through it. Elephants greet by reaching trunk-tips into one another's mouths, drape trunks over companions to reassure them, and gently touch a distressed calf. A trunk laid along the back or resting on another's face is affiliative — the elephant equivalent of a steadying hand.
Smell is inseparable from this. The trunk constantly samples the air and the ground, lifting to test a strange scent, then curling to bring molecules to the Jacobson's organ in the roof of the mouth. When you see an elephant raise its trunk like a periscope toward your vehicle, it is identifying you. Give it time and stillness, and it will usually decide you are no threat and return to feeding.
The matriarch and the social web
An elephant family is led by its oldest female, the matriarch, and she is the hub of its communication. Older matriarchs carry decades of knowledge — where water persists in a drought, which routes are safe, how to respond to a lion's roar — and the family literally listens to her. Studies in Amboseli and elsewhere show that groups led by experienced matriarchs react more appropriately to threats, because the whole family defers to her reading of a situation.
Around her, communication knits the group together: females coordinate the care of calves, older sisters and aunts practise 'allomothering', and the family maintains contact through near-constant low rumbles. Bulls live more loosely, leaving the natal family as teenagers and communicating across a looser network, but even they rely on scent and sound to find females and to gauge one another's status.
Grief, memory and staying safe
Few animal behaviours are as moving as an elephant's response to death. Family members will gather around a dead companion, touch the body and bones with trunk and feet, stand in long silences, and return to the site over years. Whether or not we call it grief, it reveals extraordinary memory and social attachment, and it is one reason elephants command such respect from the guides who work alongside them.
That same intelligence is why safe viewing depends on reading, not testing, an elephant. Keep engines idle and voices low, never come between a mother and a calf or block a family's path to water, and always leave an escape route open for the animals. If an elephant signals discomfort, the answer is space and patience. Respect the warnings and elephants are among the most rewarding animals in Africa to watch; ignore them and they are among the most dangerous.

Can humans hear elephant rumbles?
You can hear the upper, audible part of a rumble as a low growling sound, but the deepest infrasonic components below about 20 Hz are inaudible to us. Sometimes you feel them as a faint vibration rather than hear them.
How can I tell if an elephant is angry or just curious?
A curious elephant investigates with a raised, mobile trunk while staying fairly relaxed. An agitated one spreads its ears, shakes its head, throws dust or trumpets, and may swing a foot. Standing tall, silent and facing you is the most serious sign — the vehicle should withdraw.
What is a mock charge and how should I react?
A mock charge is a bluff: the elephant runs a few fast steps with ears out and trumpeting, then stops. It is telling you to leave. The correct response is for the driver to reverse away calmly and give space — never to advance for a closer shot.
