What to know before you fly

Balloon safaris are a premium add-on and worth budgeting for deliberately. Book ahead, as flights are weather-dependent and can be cancelled at short notice for wind or rain — build a little flexibility into your itinerary in case you need to reschedule.

Dress in layers for the cool dawn (it is surprisingly cold before sunrise and warms fast), wear closed shoes, and be ready for a very early start. Landings can be bumpy, so listen to the pilot's brief. Cameras do well aloft, but keep a strap on everything and simply take a few minutes to watch with your own eyes rather than only through a lens.
