How to identify
Relatively large body size, body length approximately 70-90 cm; distinct black spur-like projection on the leading edge of the wing; plumage mainly black and white, white chest, black back; bill is thick with red spots; legs and feet are red.
Habitat
Wetlands, lakes, rivers, swamps, and water bodies near open woodland savannas.
Diet
Omnivorous, mainly feeding on plant seeds, aquatic plants, insects, small invertebrates, and small fish.
When it is active
Diurnal, active frequently during the day.
Where it lives
Widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria; commonly seen in Maasai Mara National Reserve.
